VISITAS DE OBSERVACIÓN / JOB SHADOWING

Los últimos días de nuestra estancia en Joensuu, los hemos aprovechado Patricia y yo para visitar dos centros en la ciudad, uno de primaria, RANTAKYLÄN KOULO,  y otro de secundaria, YHTEISKOULUN LUKIO.

Patricia realizó la visita al centro de primaria. Bajo la coordinación de la profesora Marita Hirvonen, conoció de primera mano el trabajo que realizan allí diferentes maestros. Empiezan el día con actividades relacionadas con las emociones, para que los alumnos puedan conectarse consigo mismos, relajarse y empezar el aprendizaje de una forma más tranquila. También realizó con los alumnos locales actividades de presentación de nuestro colegio y de las principales actividades que llevamos a cabo. Los objetivos de esta visita fueron conocer el funcionamiento de la educación primaria en Finlandia, familiarizarse con la enseñanza de lenguas extrajeras, el uso de las tablets en el centro y los espacios más adecuados para el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras.

Yo estuve en clases de lengua extrajera con Seppo Mäkelä, profesor de inglés en secundaria. En estas clases conocí cómo organizan las clases de lengua extranjera y cuáles son los espacios que utilizan para ellas. Además, me explicó qué programas y sistemas utilizan,  principalmente para las sesiones de conversación. En estas sesiones tuve la oportunidad e interactuar con alumnos de secundaria y llevar a cabo con ellos actividades de conversación. Estas actividades fueron posibles gracias a Mari Petrelius, profesora de ciencias, que me puso en contacto con el claustro.

Desde aquí aprovechamos para agradecerles la amabilidad que tuvieron con nosotras, al abrirnos las puertas de sus aulas y permitirnos interactuar con los alumnos. Toda una experiencia que, sin duda, ha merecido la pena.

During the last days of our staying in Joensuu, Patricia and I went to visit two different schools in the city, one of them of primary education RANTATYLÄN KOULU, and other one of secondary education, YHTEISKOULUN LUKIO.

Patricia visited the primary school. Under the coordination of Marita Hirvonen, she knewn there the job of different teachers. They start the day developing activities related to feelings and emotions, so that the students could have a time for introspection and intrapersonal communication. In this way, they are able to start the classes in a quiet way. Patricia also developed some activities of introduction of our school to the local students in Joensuu. The main objectives of this visit were to know how primary education works in Finland, getting familiar with the teaching of foreign languages, the use of tablets in the classroom and knowing the best environments for the teaching and learning languages.

My experience was different since I attended some clases of English as a foreign language with the teacher Seppo Mäkelä. I these classes I learned how they organize the classes and which are the best environments for the learning of languages. Besides this, the teacher explained me different programmes and systems they use, mainly to the oral classes. In these classes I had the opportunity to interact with students and to develop different conversation activities. All these activities were possible thanks to Mari Petrelius, teacher of science, that introduced me to different teachers in that high school.

We want to take this opportunity to thank them all for their kindness towards us, for opening their classes and allowing us to interact with students. A really beautiful experience.

KARHUNMÄKI PRIMARY SCHOOL

En primer lugar, muchas gracias a todos los que habéis entrado al blog hasta ahora y, en especial, a los que habéis participado en el juego que Patricia y yo hemos publicado hoy. 

Nuestra compañera Natalia Escuderos ha dado en el clavo, ya que las dos fotografías pertenecen a un colegio. Estábamos convencidas de que si ella participaba en el juego, se llevaba el premio, tal y como ha ocurrido. Se trata del colegio KARHUNMÄKI PRIMARY SCHOOL, un colegio que lleva tan solo 4 meses funcionando en ese edificio. Las instalaciones son magníficas, en cuya construcción y planificación han trabajado codo con codo profesores del centro y arquitectos. El resultado es un centro con espacios amplios, luminosos, prácticos y multifuncionales. 

El director del colegio, Mr. Timo Nykänen, nos ha dado una cálida bienvenida y nos ha acompañado por las instalaciones, explicándonos las funciones de cada uno de los espacios. Desde aquí, le damos las gracias por su gran labor, por su amabilidad y su respeto. 

Al entrar al colegio, todos los alumnos se descalzan y se mueven por allí tan solo con calcetines en los pies. La sensación que quieren transmitir a sus alumnos es que se encuentran como en casa. De hecho, el director ha hecho referencia al edificio como "school house" en varias ocasiones. 

Las 2 fotografías que hemos publicado en la entrada anterior pertecen a este centro. La primera la hemos tomado en el hall de entrada. Es un espacio en el que, además de la chimenea, la cocina y los sillones que habéis visto, también están el comedor de los alumnos y un gran escenario para diferentes actuaciones. La segunda fotografía anterior pertenece al aula de tecnología. Todos los alumnos realizan actividades allí. Recordad, por favor, que se trata de un colegio de educación primaria, por lo tanto los alumnos tienen entre 7 y 12 años. 

Os dejamos algunas fotografías más para que podáis disfrutar tanto como nosotras hemos hecho. También compartimos algunas fotografías de la nevada de hoy.

First of all,  thanks to all of you who have entered our blog and, above all, to those who have participated in our special game today.

The winner has been Natalia Escuderos, since those two pictures belong to a school in Joensuu. We were a hundred per cent sure that, if she participated, she would win the prize. So the school is KARHUNMÄKI PRIMARY SCHOOL, and they moved to this building only 4 months ago. The facilities are wonderful and both teachers and architects worked together in their planning. The result is building with big open spaces, full of light, practical and multifunctional.

The principal, Mr.Timo Nykänen, has given us a warm welcome and has guided us in our visit to this school, explaining us how they use every single room. We want to take this opportunity to congratulate him for his great work and to thank him for his kidness and respect.

When the students come into the school, they take off their shoes and they walk around the classroom just wearing socks in their feet. What they want the students to feel is that they are like at home; in fact, the principal mentioned several times the expression "school hause" to make reference to this new building.

The two pictures we published in the previous entry belong to this school. We have taken the first one at the hall of the school. This is an area that also has the canteen and a big stage to their performances. The second picture published before has been taken in the technology room, where all the students develop different activities. But please remember that we are talking about a primary school and the students there are between 7 and 12 years of age.

We share with you some pictures, for you to enjoy as much as we did in the morning. We also publish some pictures of today snow.

TIC en el aula / Technology in the classroom

Si el día de ayer fue interesante, hoy las sesiones lo han sido aún más para nosotras. Las sesiones han girado alrededor de una pregunta fundamental: ¿cuál debería ser el papel de las TIC en nuestras aulas? Al hablar de TIC hacemos referencia tanto a programas informáticos que podemos usar en nuestras clases como al uso de tablets o smartphones. 

Todos nosotros, adultos de más de 30 años, nos hemos tenido que adaptar a los cambios que la tecnología nos ha ido aportando. Recordamos los antiguos teléfonos con cable y una esfera con números que hacíamos girar para marcar, los reproductores de música portátiles que utilizábamos cuando queríamos escuchar música fuera de casa, los vídeos Beta y VHS con las cintas que ahora nos parecen enormes, los ordenadores de sobre mesa. Poco a poco fueron apareciendo los primeros teléfonos móviles, los CDs y DVDs para almacenar información, los ordenadores portátiles. Ahora, en un mismo teléfono tenemos múltiples programas y aplicaciones que nos siven para comunicarnos unos con otros, para escuchar música o ver vídeos, para entretenernos jugando, etc. Nosotros nos hemos adaptado a estos cambios. Nuestros alumnos, sin embargo, no son conscientes de todos estos cambios y todas estas tecnologías son algo normal para ellos. 

Y si es algo que les resulta tan normal, tan obvio y con lo que disfrutan y se sienten motivados, ¿por qué no utilizarlas en nuestra práctica diaria? A lo largo de la mañana hemos conocido algunas herramientas que nos gustaría introducir en nuestras sesiones de clase al regresar de nuestra formación.

Los profesores participantes hemos hablado sobre las emociones que sentimos cuando pensamos en implementar la tecnología con los alumnos. Algunas de las ideas que nos vienen de forma inmediata a la mente son "atracción, motivación o entusiasmo". Estamos convencidas que es algo positivo. No negamos que hay también algunos miedos, pero este sentimiento lo escribimos en letra pequeña y lo podemos compensar con una buena organización y planificación. 

Para finalizar, os dejamos algunas frases que nos parecen inspiradoras para continuar con nuestro proyecto:

- Debemos aceptar los cambios.

- La technología es technología solo para aquellos que nacieron antes de la technología.

- Debemos preparar a los alumnos para su futuro, no para nuestro pasado.

- La base de nuestras clases debe ser la CONFIANZA. Sin confianza no puede haber cambio.

Después de una larga jornada de trabajo y para terminar el día, hemos visitado un lago precioso donde van los habitantes de Joensuu a disfrutar de la típica sauna finlandesa.

If yesterday classes were interesting, today lessons have been even more. In every lesson today we have been thinking about a fundamental question: which role must technology have in our classes? When we mention technology, we mean both the software and the tablets or smartphones we can use in class.

All of us, adults of more than 30 years of age, have had to addapt ourselves to different technological changes. We can remember the old telephones we had at home, with a circle to dial the numbers, the walkman we had to listen to music when we were outside our house, the videos, the big table computers. Nowadays, we have a single device with lots of programmes and applications that allow us to communicate, listen to music, watch videos, be entertained, etc. As I said before, we have had to addapt ourselves to all these changes. Our students, however, are not conscient of all these changes and technology is something quite normal for them.

And, if technology is something so normal for them, something so obvious and motivating, why don't we use it in our dayly routines? Today we have learnt some interesting tools we would like to introduce in our classes as soon as we arrive from our training course.

We have also discussed about the emotions we feel when we think about implementing all these techniques with our students. Some of the ideas that come immediately to our minds are "attraction, motivation or enthusiasm". We are a hundred per cent sure that this is something positive. We must say that there are also some fears, but we write this feeling with small letters and we can balance it with plannification and a good organization.

To conclude today, we want to share with you some inspiring sentences to continue developing  our project:

- We must embrace changes.

- Technology is technology only to thoses born before the technology.

- We need to prepare students for their future, not for our past.

- Our classes must be built on TRUST. If we don't trust our students we won't change.

After a long day at work and to finish our day, we have visited a beautiful lake were the people from Joensuu go to enjoy the traditional Finnish sauna.

PRIMER DÍA DE TRABAJO / FIRST DAY AT WORK

Nuestro primer día de trabajo en Finlandia ha sido realmente interesante. Hemos llegado al centro YHTEISKOULUN LUKIO, que es para nosotros un instituto de educación secundaria. Para llegar allí, hemos dado un paseo de unos 30 minutos y hemos podido conocer algunos de los edificios más emblemáticos de la ciudad. Nos ha llamado mucho la atención el mobiliario del aula: las mesas, las sillas, los enchufes sobre nuestras cabezas, el piano al fondo de la clase, el lavabo... Todo está pensado para poder modificar en cualquier momento las actividades, la metodología, la forma de trabajo. Rápidamente se pueden cambiar los grupo, las disposiciones de las mesas, etc. 

Una vez en la clase, hemos empezado a trabajar. En primer lugar, una actividad para romper el hielo. Dividos en grupos, hemos intentado construir una torre utilizando materiales un tanto peculiares. Al terminar esta introducción, el director del centro Mr. Esa Räty, nos ha explicado cómo es el sistema educativo finlandés. Un aspecto muy interesante es la participación de los alumnos en las decisiones del centro. Por ejemplo, las sillas en las que hemos estado sentados las eligieron democráticamente los alumnos; se les presentaron diferentes opciones, las probaron y eligieron las que consideraron más cómodas. Y debemos felicitarles porque realmente son muy cómodas.

Tras la bienvenida y presentación por parte del director, hemos sido los participantes quienes hemos dado a conocer nuestro centros de procedencia. Somos un grupo formado por 21 profesores de los siguientes países: Letonia, Croacia, Rumanía, Italia, Hungría, Bélgica y España. Aunque cada centro es único, todos compartimos ciertos valores: el respeto, la responsabilidad, el trabajo en equipo, la identidad europea, el interés por establecer relaciones con otros países de Europa.

Una vez finalizada la jornada, hemos aprendido a concinar algunos platos típicos de la gastronomía finlandesa: Karelian pie y salmón finlandés. ¡Estaba todo delicioso!

Our first day at work in Finland has been really interesting. We have arrived to the centre YHTEISKOULUN LUKIO, that is for us a secondary school. We've arrived there after a 30 minutes walk and we've been able to know some of the most important buildings in town. The most important thing that has attracked our attention is the forniture in the classes: the tables, the chairs, the sockets on our heads, the piano at the back of the room, the sink... Everything is thought to be easily modified according to the activity to be developed. 

Once in class, we have started working. First of all, we've done an ice-breaker. Divided in different groups, we've tried to build a tower using "different" materials. After this, the principal of the school, Mr. Esa Räty has explained us the Finnish educational system. A very interesting point is the active participation of the students in the decision of the school. For example, the chairs in which we have been sitiing were democratically chosen by the students; they were shown different options and they chose those which they thought to be the most comfortable. And we have to congratulate them because they are really comfortable.

Then, it was time for our presentations. We are a group formed by 21 teachers from the following countries: Latvia, Croatia, Romania, Italy, Hungary, Belgium and Spain. Although our schools are completely different and we come from different backgrounds, we share some values: respect, responsability, team work, European identity and interest for establishing links with other European countries.

And, after finishing our work, we have learned how to cook some traditional Finnish dishes: Karelian pie & salmon. Everything was delicious!

We are looking forward to know what we are doing tomorrow!!! 

Llegada a Joensuu / Arrival

Después de una noche de vuelo, hemos conseguido divisar Joensuu desde el aire. Nos ha sorprendido bastante el paisaje, con mucho bosque y lagos,  así como la temperatura. Desde el avión, antes de aterrizar, hemos podido ver que algunas zonas están todavía cubiertas de nieve.

After a night flying, we could see Joensuu from the air. We got surprised by the landscape, full of forests and lakes. But the weather is also surprising for us. From the plane, before landing, we could see some areas that are still covered with snow.

Una vez instaladas en el hotel, hemos salido a dar un paseo, a explorar la ciudad que, pese a las opiniones de los finlandeses, todavía tiene un aspecto bastante invernal, ¿no os parece?
